Starting in Manawatu, the North Range to Balance Crossing takes you up onto the Tararua Ranges along North Range Road, and down into the Tararua District to the former Bridge Cafe site, some 5kms south of Woodville, in the Tararua District of Wairarapa.

Transport leaves Palmerston North at 8am, taking approximately half an hour to the start of the walk at the Pahiatua Track junction.

The walk winds its way along a farm track (sometimes muddy) through New Zealand’s largest wind farm, the spectacular Tararua wind farm. A clear day will deliver magnificent views over the Manawatu and out to the west coast. The track then winds its way down Hall Block Road, finishing at the former Bridge Cafe site at the eastern end of Te Apiti – Manawatu Gorge. This route was considered as a replacement for the Gorge Road.

Transport will be waiting there to take you to Palmerston North, arriving back in the city about 3.30pm.

Suitable footwear ( stout walking shoes or boots ) and clothing are essential as the weather can change very quickly. Some days it can be very windy or misty. Bring plenty of snacks, water and food and drink for lunch.
