The popular Totara Reserve Fern Walk, hosted by Horizons Regional Council in the Pohangina Valley, some 35kms from Palmerston North, leads you through the most intact part of what is one of the regions most ancient and accessible remnants of native bush. The Totara Reserve Fern Walk will take you through stunning native bush with many iconic trees to be seen, including totara, matai, rimu and kahikatea. Walk on the new upgraded walk.
The birdlife is another highlight of this walk, with native birds such as tui, fantail, bellbird and the kereru wood pigeon making their home here. At the end of the walk, you’ll get to enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch, held at the Totara Reserve camp ground, nestled alongside the Pohangina River. On the return journey to Palmerston north we will stop at the old Pohangina Estate Vineyard for wine tasting.
Three varieties of grapes: chardonnay, pinot gris and pinot noir, were grown here to produce award winning wines. We can sample six of their wines in a garden setting.
