The popular Totara Reserve Fern Walk, hosted by Horizons Regional Council in the Pohangina Valley, some 35 Kms from Palmerston North, leads you through the most intact part of what is one of the regions most ancient and accessible remnants of native bush. The Totara Reserve Fern Walk will take you through stunning native bush with many iconic trees to be seen, including totara, matai, rimu and kahikatea. Walk on the new upgraded walk.
The birdlife is another highlight of this walk, with native birds such as tui, fantail, bellbird and the kereru wood pigeon making their home here. At the end of the walk, you’ll get to enjoy a classic kiwi BBQ lunch courtesy of Horizons Regional Council, held at the Totara Reserve camp ground, nestled alongside the Pohangina River.
