The popular Totara Reserve Fern Walk, hosted by Horizons Regional Council is located in the Pohangina Valley, 40  kms from Palmerston North. You will be guided by members of Horizons biodiversity team in one of the region’s most intact, ancient and accessible remnants of native forest. The newly upgraded Totara Reserve Fern Walk passes through stunning native bush with many iconic trees to be seen, including totara, matai, rimu and kahikatea.

The abundant birdlife is another highlight of this walk, with native birds such as tui, fantail, bellbird and wood pigeon making their home here.

At the end of the walk, you’ll get to enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch, held at the Totara Reserve camp ground, nestled alongside the Pohangina River. On the return journey to Palmerston North we will stop at the Herb Farm for a cup of tea or coffee and for a wander around the shop.
